Opinions Are What Punk Is All About

"There are many "definitions" of the word punk. To some, punk means being hateful or fighting all the time, or being against the norm. Being a punk is not about breaking the law, having no respect for anyone,or being "different". It's about being yourself, not what society wants you to be. It's about questioning authority not disrespecting it. It's about being happy with yourself and having fun with life. To some people being a punk is even about how long they've been listening to punk music, how their hair is done and their clothes, or even who their friends are, yet don't believe in punk music or what these artists are trying to say. The clothes and hair  mean nothing. You don't have to know every single punk band that ever existed or every underground band there is. It's about standing for what you believe in not what society or friends want you to stand for. Punk is something you are, not something you are just because someone told you it was "cool". It's not the knowledge it's the lifestyle. Punk is also about unity, United we stand, divided we fall. Don't hate people because you're punk and they're not deal with them, they are "different" just like you. Punk does not have a rule book, the rules are, there are no rules. You shouldn't have to dress certain way or know everything about punk to be classified. Punk is also about having your own classification. Punk should be considered a good thing to society not something that is feared or considered "weird". It's something creative, it gives everyone their own unique style. Twenty years ago punk was something not a lot of people were into, it wasn't what is called "mainstream". Now punk has become more along the lines of pop music. Basically punk has gone to shit these past few years. People classify themselves as punk when they don't know what it's about or what it stands for. They think they are punk because the listen to Sum 41 or Blink 182. Sure these bands may stand for what punk is but that doesn't mean they are trying to say anything about it.  Punk has become so mainstream that pretty soon we'll have to be Britney Spears fans to be classified as "different".  People are becoming "punk" now a days because it's "cool" and not what society wants them to be when they are just posing because of the style." - Melissa H.

NO, punk will never be the same. In fact, I'd say it's getting worse. Maybe not. So much the "newer" bands/music, but rather the shape of the whole punk thing in general has taken. What I mean is punk went from being a more underground culture who's attitude reflected the music, to now being front & center in the music industry to the point of punk being fashionable & "hip" if you will.

Think about it:

* you have punk jingles in commercials.
* if you have a mohawk now, chances are the chicks like you, and you never have to think about getting your ass kicked.
*you have it on huge stages with a banner of a corporate sponsor in the background.
* and a on local level, gone are the days of shady nasty bars that when punk bands played, brought in some pretty hardcore bastards that would gladdy rip heads off of anybody that fucked with the program. now it attracts mom & dad who are excited to see their little billy's "punk band" play.
* I love punk rock. one of the best perks of that was that I didn't have to put up with having to spend $20 on a ticket (a ticket!! what was that!?). and better yet, I didn't have to share my space at a show with people I'd otherwise want to beat up in high school.

But that's what happens when you take something like punk & expose it to the masses.

We all know that punk will never be the same because it has taken on a new form. the better question is:
IS IT A GOOD THING?

Personally (and I stress "personally"), in some ways it is a good thing. but in most ways it's not. they took my beloved punk rock, gave it a logo & fancy artwork, and made a bunch of complete pussies out of the crowd! honestly!!! I wonder sometimes if everyone's more of bratty hippies, instead of the sophistcated bullies, and beautiful thugs we once were.

That's my .02 - Bobby

Just music?  Just music?
Tell that to the millions of people who play punk rock and feel it.  Punk rock is about true life, what youre thinking.  Whats going on thru your "diffrent" head.  Most of punk rock is about not fitting in, not thinking the same way as before.   Punk rock is like when you were a kid, you'd toake the 9V battery and touch it to your toungue.  Tingly huh?  lets do it again.  Its that same reaction that makes up punk rock.  Wow, that was weird, but dirrerent, lets try it again.  Its like saying being a skater is just carying around a board (never riding it), wearing "skater" pants and a big indy hoodie.  Does that make you a skater?

Just because you bleed into our little world and culture dont mean its ok.

My point is just because you try dont mean you are completely into it.  You dont know what it was like growing up with that shit.  Getting beat up by the jocks. How can you relate to that or appreciate that if you're one of them.  My freshman year I was beat up almost every day cuz guys thought I should play football and said they'd kick my ass every day untill I joined the team.  they thought because they were cool they could pick on punk rock john.  They threw my clothes in the showers durng gym class and everything.  Thats where the whole jock/punk thing hits real life.  But you wouldnt understand that, so dont try to relate and say its only music untill you've been put in that position.

F-ck all you prepy peices of sh-t - ElBeau

To me punk is rebelling against the system, I mean society in general. Punk is a way of freedom and availability to promote belief, expression, and opinions, which often bring's an overwhelming anarchist feeling to those outside of the punk community. With this whole anarchist belief it tends to be a fad to the new wavers, if only they knew what it meant. Anarchy is any form of societal organization without a ruler or other form of centralized, coercive control. It seem to be that those who think they are anarchist, believe anarchy is to present your self as being violent, or destructive. What they have to understand is anarchy is belief that no person should rule another, anarchy is not chaos, violent or destructive, it is more less as I see it a self rule. So to all you people, who think youre an anarchist, think twice next time before you say you are, understand what anarchy involves and how it works.

Also when I look at the whole punk rock scene, I see two major form of punks, we have the emo punkers, and then we have the hardcore punkers. The emo punkers tend to be the straight edge f-ckers, and tend to follow their favourite bands styles. The hardcores on the other hand tend to create and form there on sense of style, to show our world their creativity, and way of expression.

One thing that many punks agree on is the lameness of the Rap scene, I as a strong hater to rap, feel the need to express how rap has no influential style to any form of music in the industry today, with the exception of the rap metal bands (their just a bit confused but theyll come to their senses yet!!) Rap is all about the yeah I gotz me 20 hoes, I be all about the bling! bling!, when I role up in my fresh new cadi, u better not but talkin' sh-t about me or I'll pull a drive by on your street theres no way in hell can you call that music. Now punk and rock is a true style of music and presents much influence in the music seen, punk and rock show how freedom and expression can be expressed openly, and also shows you that there are other people in the world who face and have faced the same holes in life.

Now moving on! Lets talk about this whole patch thing! Sure its a away of expression, but theres this one patch, which really pisses me of it says punk what the f-ck is that about, come on really! If u were actually punk people would know, you dont need to promote it in that manner, and another patch which really pinches my nerves is the ones that say anarchy no!! Thats wrong you dont promote your self as an anarchist, if you are an anarchist keep it to your self, the only time you need to express that opinion is when your asked about your beliefs, or a defending such a thing as a civil right.

well, first of all...I really disslike that people look at (quote unquote) punkers and generally think that they are trouble makers. The typical steriotype of a "punk" is really degrating and giving society the wrong impression of them. Thats how shallow society is today and its really depressing. And people who try to be different are just helping people stereotype the "punkers" more. There is a whole dillema with posers, and i just think that you dont have to try to be different. Wear something because you like it, listen to music because you enjoy it, hang with people you like. You cant live your life a lie because you want to be like someone else. Remeber punk isn't a style; it is a way of life and you cant judge people because of what they look like...

Second...People also give a bad reputation to anarchists. They think that being an anarchist is being violent and distructive. But its not at all. I call myself an anarchist because I dont like how the system is being run. The system sucks and its brought us to such a depressing society. This is what anarchy means....

an·ar·chy   Pronunciation Key (an'r-key)
n. pl. an·ar·chies
  1. Absence of any form of political authority.
  2. Political disorder and confusion.
  3. Absence of any cohesive principle, such as a common standard or purpose.

There you see there is nothing there about being violent and distructive, its rebeling against the system because it contradicts your beliefs and thoughts. You dont have to go and vandalize government buildings you can do something as simple as organize a small group to protest at the doors of government buildings to get a message accross about what you want...

I hope this has reached out to a couple of people and have made you realize that people today are shallow and degrating.

There are many different views on what "punk" really stands for. To some its represents a time to appear the toughest in the pits and beat the crap out of everyone at a show. Others think you should rebel against authority, dress a certain way and have certain ideals to be considered a true punk. Whether the type is political, emotional, hardcore, popular or any other form of punk, to me it remains a lifestyle. The type of lifestyle that punk stands for to me is not caring about what others think. Punk is so diverse in its meanings that you cannot classify it as one thing or another. For those that think it stands for love, hate, doing what you feel etc., those people cannot be condemned for saying those things. It is for this reason that punk has taken on many different genres and beliefs to various groups. Punk symbolizes a freedom to stand up for what you believe in and what you dont believe in no matter what anyone says. Its seems that today, punk is portrayed as a way of not adapting oneself to the prevailing trends of a modern society. It is fine for people to believe that they have to conform to the style depicted as "punk" to be considered one. To me however, being a punk is more in the heart and mind than anything else. As long as you understand and realize that what you believe in is what you feel in your heart, there is no reason why any one who likes punk should be put down or denounced for what they think is right. Now for the famous quote of "Punk is Dead!" Ive heard this said before and I believe it, that "punk was never really alive to begin with." I mean, it surely shows that punk is becoming more mainstream as many more people are starting to get attached to it. Well, when I say "it" I mean Blink-One Eighty Who? And Sum Fourty What? But no matter what your preference, they are still classified to the majority of people as punk. Is punk slowly being murdered by becoming a mainstream, popular and trendy thing to do? Only time will tell. If there ever is a funeral for the term punk, it will be for the bands. However, the lifestyle will always remain the same...at least in my mind.

- Matt Ness

In my opinion, the idea of *punk* - the music, the lifestyle, the ethics and etc can vary from person to person. Its all subjective. But there seems to be a common idea or theme with punk. Generally, it is about running against the grain; trying to break free from mainstream society. Whether the idea of going against the status quo is in forms of Politics, Money/Business/Capitalism Issues, Romantic issues, Drug issues(no drugs vs pro drugs), Gender Equality issues, Authority and youth, Sexism Issues, Emotional Artistry Issues...and countless others. The main idea seems frequent - its about 'thinking outside of the box', being abstract and being different. When i look around my highschool, my community, the scene, and my friends, I have noticed something disturbing. Many of these self-proclaimed "punks" are really into "punk" because they have a need to feel superior than someone else. By choosing to listen to the style of music, their beliefs and their image, they feel better about themselves by creating a different image from the majority of those around them. They seem to thrive on being "anti-mainstream" and elitist about it as well.

I have experienced way too much of this arrogance and ignorance amungst these elitist pathetic self-proclaimed little punk children. Too many of them (if not, ALL) are Homophobic, Sexist, care too much about popularity, make fun of nerdy people or losers...and so much more.  -->Sure, they might know quite a bit about the music they listen to, and they may have quite an opinion about what punk is... however 9 times out of 10 they are rude, and just downright disgusting to punks.
** People like this give punk a bad name.

...I no long call my self a punk. Or yet, i don't think i ever have. I have countless times mocked whiney punks and so forth however.
...The more ridiculous elitist punks i meet, the more i hate the whole image of punk.

Its an old cliche that is fad. Punks are killing the image of what it really is. In theory however, I believe punk IS a GOOD thing - its creative, progressive, original and unique and liberating. But when there are the ignorant, arrogant and immature self-proclaimed punk elitist children out there, it makes me really want to smash my head into a brick wall.

I don't understand how all these sub-genre-ed punks can disrespect and make fun of the other sub genres of punk that don't include them. I've seen political kids making fun of emo kids. I see emo kids making fun of mainstream pop punkers, saying "i'm more indie than you". I see silly elitist so called hardcore kids making sexist comments about riot grrls and other females in general. How can punk sub genre's make fun of each other? Isn't punk about being "united", liberation, and so forth. *"united we stand, divided we fall"*
...while the scenesters are making fun of another punk scene, they are dividing each other.
..isolation, and etc. Thats why i believe we are falling. Punk is full of hypocrisy, oxymorons and is only now just based on image and status.

..AND in addition, -> some food for thought. I seriously cannot stand when Punks make fun of rap music, pop music or anything else that is not under the label of punk. You can't even be elitist about another's music if you don't belong to its ethics. Rappers and hXc doesn't even compete with each other. Both are in two different worlds. ALl i want to see is the disrespect and arrogance stop. Its really pathetic. Making fun of rap is sooo 1997. Seriously. Its not going to go away. Be happy that your beloved music is not mainstream.  Afterall you silly punkers, isn't that what punk is? Anti-Mainstream? Your music does not compete with rap, so give it up!!

...and there's just so much more i could say. But that's for another day!

-Gwendolyn Bieniara

i view punk as the ability to be yourself. not following any trends just to be cool. nowa days punk is classified as a type of music. to me its more then just a type of music its the freedom of being yourself. and id like to ad i dont just like punk music i like some rock some metal. But at heart im just being myself. Listening to some kickass tunes. Allot of my friends hate my Punk music it doesnt stop me from listening to it. you know why? cause im myself. Im proud to say that i like some songs that arent punk as well. because the way i see it is. If you like it then enjoy it, if you dont like it, then dont enjoy it. simple as that. dont take what other people say sereously. like what you want.

A Message to Old and Young Punks

I've been noticing a lot lately about punks, young and old, complaining about one another and what they have to say. So in this article I will address both groups of the punks and explain so each knows why they are complaining about one another.

First we will start with the old punks. I don't want to sound pushy but the reason the young ones are whining about all of these horrible bands and why the suck so much is because they have to go to school everyday and witness it. They have to deal with all of the poseurs calling themselves punks and how great all of these bands are. Im not saying that all these young ones whining are true punks, a lot of them could turn out to just be poseurs supporting a trend trying to be different. But these kids are right, some of them are the future and they need your guidance so they dont f#$k all the history up.

Now, onto the young. You guys need to understand that the older guys/girls are just trying to keep people from f#$king up the history. But you really do need to stop complaining about what is going on in the mainstream. Seriously, since when was punk about caring about what other people think, when was it about paying attention to what the rest of the world was doing. You all should just be yourselves and just forget about and not care about what is going in the mainstream world.

This isn't mean to be an over critical rant or anything like that. I just want to get my message across.
